| Issue details: | The first official Bolivian stamp, a green 5 centavos denomination featuring a Condor standing on the Globe, was issued on June 11th, 1867. Although the engraver, Mr. Ramon Estruch, had only finished at that time the first 48 stamps of a 72 stamps copper plate, the Bolivian Government wanted the first stamps to be issued. In the following days the engraver increased the plate to 60 stamps first, then 65, thereafter 67, until finally the government allowed him to finish the plate with its entire 72 positions. A total of 4 re-engravings and at least 4 retouches of the plate were made later in 1867. Shown here are the 11 distinguishable States of this Condor plate. The differences between the original plate states 1 to 5 (with 48, 60, 65, 67 and 72 stamps respectively) can best be appreciated by comparing paper thickness, color and plate wear. For the re-engraved and retouched states 6 to 11, it is best to watch the changes on the same position of each of them, for example position 7, featured here (only the 48-stamp plate features position 34).
The green 5 centavos is the 1st part (1/3) of a serial issue of 3 condor stamps issued during 1867. On December 2, 1867, a Second Condor Issue of 4 different denominations was released. The Condor issues were meant for both 'correos' and 'contratos', postage and revenue. Most of them were used as fiscal stamps rather than postal stamps. | | Technical details: | Original Plate, 2nd State, 60 Stamps Plate. | | Item details: | On this plate 5 Rows are finished.
